In the early 1980s, guitarist Ron Johnson along with two members from the group Cameo began to kick around the idea of starting a band called Brainstorm. Inspired by the impact of a recent hurricane, the name changed and Windstorm Band was born. “I said with the talent we had, we would blow people away,” says Johnson. “And honestly, we have been doing it ever since!”
Started in 1983, Windstorm is an 8-piece musical powerhouse known for their distinct sound and kinetic performances. When asked why he established Windstorm, Ron says he wanted to create “a training ground for up and coming musicians to prepare themselves for bigger venues.” His belief is that the diversity of Windstorm’s musical repertoire and dynamic performances prepare artists to perform with any group and for any type of event. Members of Windstorm have previously performed and collaborated with major artists like Donnie McClurkin, Tony! Toni! Toné! and H-Town. Johnson himself has performed for at venues around the world including playing for former U.S. President Barack Obama. The Band has traveled to Paris and London and performed at the Trumpet Awards.
Performing everything from R&B to Pop to Country, Windstorm has been bringing dynamic performances to weddings, festivals, concerts, and parties for decades and shows no signs of stopping. The faces may change occasionally but Johnson says Windstorm will always be a force to be reckoned with.
